The Detroit Fire Department has kicked off the Detroit Smoke Alarm Program (DSAP), deploying a brigade of fire safety stewards to install thousands of smoke alarms across the Motor City. Announced by Executive Fire Commissioner Chuck Simms, this initiative is an ambitious plan to bolster fire safety for residents, with Simms stressing the critical nature of properly installed smoke alarms. As reported by the City of Detroit's official news portal, the DSAP aims to reach 1,300-2,000 homes within its first year.
Placing 10-year battery-equipped smoke alarms is central to their strategy, requiring no battery changes for a decade, this helps reduce the risk of malfunction caused by overlooked maintenance. Thrilled with the department's support, Detroit resident Yvette Stephenson, whose home received the first DSAP installation, told officials that feeling safe once again is comforting after enduring a kitchen fire earlier in the year.
According to the National Fire Protection Administration, homes equipped with working smoke alarms see a more than 50% reduction in the risk of fatalities from house fires. Fire incidents in the nation unduly claim lives where no or non-functioning smoke alarms are found, establishing a dire need for the DSAP.
Addressing specific needs, the Detroit Fire Department is ensuring inclusivity by providing specialized alarms and alert devices for residents who are deaf or hard of hearing. Flashing strobe lights and bed shakers are among the equipment available. "No need to remember to change batteries every 6 months," the program's enthusiasts emphasize the user-friendly nature of the life-saving devices, according to the city's announcement.
A solid fire safety plan is the second crucial step in safeguarding residents, with the Detroit Fire Department advising on action protocols in tandem with alarm installations. Detroiters in need of smoke alarm installation can reach out to the DFD's Community Relations Division or sign up directly through the provided QR code, ensuring their safety net is firmly in place.
