An elderly man, aged 69, was found dead along the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, New York yesterday, authorities have confirmed. The body was seen face down on the rocky edges of the notoriously contaminated waterway near Nevins and Butler Streets at approximately 2:03 p.m., as per police reports mentioned by the Daily News.
Upon discovery, the man was unresponsive, leading to emergency medical technicians declaring him dead at the scene, the individual’s identity has not yet been released. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is set to determine the cause of death, which remained uncertain as of Thursday evening. The New York Post reported that authorities are looking into whether foul play was involved.
Photographs taken at the site showed the gray-haired man lying with his face toward the ground, his feet and calves submerged in the canal's waters. The Gowanus Canal has long been marked by its industrial past and subsequent pollution, deemed a Superfund site due to its extensive contamination levels.
In recent years, the canal has been the focus of a $1.5 billion federal environmental cleanup initiative, which began in 2020. Substantial changes to the area are expected, following a 2021 rezoning that allows for significant land redevelopment around the canal, with plans for buildings that could reach 29 stories, according to details from the Daily News. No further information regarding the case, or the plans for the surrounding area, was released in the immediate aftermath of the discovery.
