Colorado's scenic Christina State Wildlife Area, known for its lush greenery and tranquil fishing spots, has hit a bit of a snag. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, an emergency closure has been implemented in the area near Steamboat Springs as of last Monday. The reason for this closure is significant stream bank erosion that poses a threat to the structural integrity of a nearby private residence.

Officials from CPW examining the site last week were quick to recognize the pressing danger. In a decisive move that could compromise the home's structural integrity, CPW Director Jeff Davis approved the closure on Nov. 15, a quick and necessary reaction to fortify the stream bank and keep everything nice and stable. Meanwhile, local fish enthusiasts might need to reel in their plans, as the public parking area off County Road 129 is also being closed off; seems heavy machinery needs a place to park, too.

It's not all bad news though. The closure is only until CPW says otherwise, and they're on the ball with plans to do more stream bank stabilization and restoration come spring, a proactive step to ensure the landscape remains picturesque and more importantly, safe. However, with the arrival of spring, locals might expect another temporary sign-off for additional restoration work needed. Rest assured, though, fishers in the area won't be left high and dry. CPW’s Steamboat Springs Area Office is at hand, a simple call to 970-870-3333, or a peek at their 2024 Fishing Brochure should hook you up with some alternative spots.
