Heads up, Durham drivers: your nightly trek on I-40 might hit a snag this week. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has given the green light to contractors to perform some much-needed TLC on the Fayetteville Road bridge that spans the interstate. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the work is scheduled, weather permitting, and it's going to lead to closures.
Starting Nov. 20 through Nov. 22, if you're planning to head west on I-40 after 11 p.m., you'll need to reroute. The westbound lanes at Fayetteville Road will shut down faster than you can say "detour", not reopening until 5 a.m. the following day. During this time, drivers will be diverted off at Exit 276. The detour will funnel traffic onto N.C. 55, then onto N.C. 751, and finally back to I-40 West, as reported by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
As for your evening commute, some delays are to be expected, so plan accordingly. North Carolina Department of Transportation advises drivers to stay sharp and follow the signs that will guide you through the detour. For those night-owls hitting the road during the work hours, it's a temporary inconvenience, but a necessary step in ensuring safe passages on our state's highways.
