Former Nevada Assembly Speaker John Hambrick, 79, passed away on Wednesday. A Republican, he served as Speaker during the 2016 legislative session and represented Assembly District 2, covering parts of Summerlin and west Las Vegas. He was known for his dedication to fighting human trafficking and supporting vulnerable populations, as per News3LV.
John Hambrick had a distinguished career beyond politics, including roles as a special agent for the U.S. Secret Service, an investigator for the Federal Inspector General, and an agent for the Immigration and Naturalization Service. He was widely respected, with praise from colleagues across party lines. Assembly Speaker Steve Yeager remembered him for his empathy, while Assemblywoman Melissa Hardy described him: "Former Speaker John Hambrick was the best of us, gracious, kind and humble," in a News3LV report.
Nathan Emens, Hambrick's former campaign manager, revealed to KTNV that cancer was the cause of death, articulating a shared heartbreak by stating, "There's no better person I've known in the Legislature." Hambrick, who once delighted in playing the White House Santa Claus, also left an indelible mark through his work on children's issues and involvement in youth sports leagues.
John Hambrick’s political career was marked by challenges and achievements. After a controversial campaign tactic in 2012, he eventually became Assembly Speaker following a Republican sweep in 2014. During his tenure, he navigated complex issues and worked with colleagues like Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, who faced IRS liens. His final legislative session in 2019 was recognized with praise from both parties, reflecting the bipartisan respect he earned. Hambrick was often seen with his wife, Nancy, at political events until her passing that year.
