Four men have been indicted in a sweeping criminal scheme that targeted Maryland retailers with more than $800,000 in stolen goods, according to Maryland's top prosecutor. Attorney General Anthony G. Brown disclosed the charges against the individuals, all implicated in a series of "flash mob"-style robberies that took place in at least six jurisdictions within the state.
The indicted include Donte Bernard Shaw, Taquan Anthony Neal, Antonio William Polite, and Samuel Cordell Whitmire Jr., and the charges encompassing a variety of offenses are laid out. According to a report by WUSA9, these charges include participation in a criminal organization, theft scheme, conspiracy to commit theft, and second-degree burglary, among other allegations. In a significant twist, Shaw is also facing a charge for illegal possession of a regulated firearm.
The targeted stores are spread across several counties, including well-known locations like Sunglass Hut, Ulta Beauty, and LensCrafters. The criminals employed a mass theft tactic, where groups of people would suddenly enter a store, grab merchandise in large quantities, and quickly flee. "Stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from businesses can lead to higher prices for products that Marylanders need and cost hardworking employees their jobs," Attorney General Brown communicated, as detailed by NottinghamMD.
The series of thefts was first discovered in September 2023. At times, the criminals repeatedly victimized the same businesses, multiplying their impact. Investigators from the Gaithersburg and Montgomery County Police Departments spearheaded a collaborative effort that unraveled the ring. The four men will now face the judicial process in the Circuit Court for Howard County.
