A Guilford County resident is facing felony charges after allegedly engaging in insurance fraud using her deceased mother's identity. Cindy Ramzi Hanna, 48, of Greensboro, was charged with two counts of insurance fraud, one count each of identity theft and obtaining property under false pretense, as detailed by North Carolina Department of Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey.
The North Carolina Department of Insurance Criminal Investigations Division accuses Hanna of fraudulently acquiring a homeowners policy from NC Farm Bureau Insurance by using her late mother's name. It's claimed that she then tried to file a claim for pre-existing property damage, seeking $49,000—a figure that reflects not just a breach of legal trust, but also of moral bounds.
According to the arrest warrants, this incident occurred on January 24. Hanna now faces the judicial system, with her court date set for December 18 in Guilford County District Court. She was served a criminal summons on Tuesday.
Commissioner Causey highlighted the impact of insurance fraud, stating, "Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet," echoing a sentiment that is all too familiar with taxpayers. He quantified the burden by mentioning, “Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud." Causey has pledged to counteract this issue by "aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina," as per North Carolina Department of Insurance.
