The holiday figure known as "Pancho Claus" to many Houston children is facing a serious health challenge. Richard Reyes, the 73-year-old man behind the Pancho Claus persona, was hospitalized after a heart attack and is scheduled for double bypass surgery. This follows his history of heart issues, including two previous heart attacks. Despite his condition, his spirit of giving continues to inspire community action, Click2Houston reports.
Despite his health crisis, the tradition of delivering Christmas cheer to those in need has continued, with local youth taking on Pancho Claus’s cause. They have wrapped more than 50 gift boxes to encourage community support. These efforts follow the reporting by ABC13, which covered Reyes's chest pains and subsequent heart attack diagnosis. "This is my third heart attack," Reyes told ABC13 in an interview from his hospital bed.
Reyes’s legacy is focused on the distribution of gifts, with as many as 20,000 presents given to children each year, not only in Houston but also in various small towns across the Rio Grande Valley, according to his recent statements. The success of this year's drive depends on the community stepping in to support the cause while Reyes is unable to. Young volunteers are wrapping gifts and setting up collection boxes for toy donations as part of the ongoing efforts, in a report by Click2Houston.
The kids, members of the nonprofit organization HEROES, are helping to ensure that the 20,000 presents reach their intended recipients this holiday season. Despite Reyes's upcoming surgery, these volunteers have stepped in to continue his tradition. The effort is led by HEROES President and Founder Vicki Cruz, who told Click2Houston, "They said we want to help" and the kids' immediate willingness was met with a resounding "yes" to aid the ailing holiday figure.
For information on how to support Pancho Claus's mission, Reyes recommends reaching out via his "Pancho Claus" Facebook page, where details are available for those looking to contribute to the toy drive in any capacity, whether through physical locations for collecting gifts, manpower, or other forms of assistance, ABC13 reported.
