In a move designed to uphold the integrity of the impending general election on November 5, United States Attorney Michael F. Easley, Jr., has appointed Assistant United States Attorney Karen Haughton as the District Election Officer for the Eastern District of North Carolina. As reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office own news site on Thursday, Haughton is set to lead the office's efforts in accordance with the Justice Department’s nationwide Election Day Program, addressing any instances of voting rights issues, election-related threats or fraud.
With the election process often fraught with tensions, the appointment of a District Election Officer is part of the broader initiative to effectively deter and swiftly to respond to any occurrences of discrimination, intimidation at the polls, or threats against election officials. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, federal law protections are comprehensive, covering a range of offenses from vote tampering to voter intimidation, and assert the right of every citizen to cast their vote without coercion or interference.
On election day, Haughton will oversee the district's response to any complaints, ensuring that they are directed to appropriate authorities, as detailed in the U.S. Attorney's Office announcement. Those in need of reporting any election day incidents are advised to contact DEO Haughton at 919-856-4530 or 919-856-4808, or via email at [email protected].
The FBI is also preparing to support the election, with special agents available to receive allegations of election abuses. The local FBI field office can be reached at 704-672-6100 or via tips.fbi.gov. Additionally, the Civil Rights Division in Washington is open to directly receive complaints through their website or by phone at 800-253-3931. In cases of immediate danger or violence, citizens are urged to call 911 before contacting federal authorities, as local law enforcement will typically have a faster response capability in emergencies.
