Good news for drivers on Kauai: as reported by the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, the makai lane of Kūhiō Highway that has been sealed off since October 21 for essential slope stabilization, has now been successfully reopened two days ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, providing some respite and access on the vital artery near Waikoko's precarious hairpin turn. It's a reprieve for residents and travelers who have faced disruptions since the lane's closure due to emergency safety works.
The lane was back in action following completion of emergency shoring and temporary paving work last Friday, says the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation, although it's clear that this is just a portion of a larger ongoing project, because the highway will require additional slope stabilization and the construction of a barrier wall which is a work that needs completion and the full scope of the stabilization project is expected to stretch until Spring 2025, which means this is just the beginning.
With the current phase wrapped up, drivers should be wary that this isn't the end of road interventions, as intermittent lane closures and full shutdowns of Kūhiō Highway at milepost 4.7 are on the horizon to facilitate the remaining phases of the project. For those looking to skirt around any traffic snarls, scheduled lane closures and updates are posted on the HDOT website, where travelers can plan their commutes and steer clear of any scheduled construction activity.
