News 3LV reported that Jovani Guerrero Lopez, a kitchen steward at Virgin for a year, stated, "The whole point of this is to get a fair wage and get everything that everyone else got on the Strip, downtown, and even in the hotels that aren't doing that economically well like the Rio. They have been able to pay workers the fair wage they deserve."
With the upcoming Formula 1 weekend poised to bring increased attention to Las Vegas, the timing of the union's action seems calculated to garner public support. Protesters wearing yellow armbands are those prepared to take the fight to a new level by volunteering for arrest. The union's move has been met with criticism from Virgin Hotels, as they have expressed disappointment over the union's tactics. In a statement to FOX5 Vegas, Virgin Hotels conveyed, "It is disappointing that Culinary Union leaders are prepared to spend their own members' resources on fake arrests, rather than engaging in constructive good faith bargaining."
This isn't a first-time tactic for the union; they have previously orchestrated preselected member arrests during protests. A successful outcome of their previous protests has seen the union reaching new deals with other major resort operators, highlighting the distinction in Virgin Hotels' stance in the negotiation process. To date, the Culinary Union has stated that 57 people have been arrested over the course of these actions.
