Ground has officially been broken for a new affordable housing development in the Alamitos Beach area of Long Beach, which will be dedicated to serving low-income seniors and seniors who have faced homelessness, the City of Long Beach announced in a press release. The development, named 300 Alamitos, will include an 82-unit complex offering one-bedroom homes for qualified adults over the age of 55.
At the groundbreaking event on Nov. 21, Mayor Rex Richardson celebrated the commencement of the project alongside city representatives and partners from Mercy Housing California and Wells Fargo, “300 Alamitos will be a safe, dignified place seniors can call home,” Mayor Rex Richardson affirmed, “This new development underscores the City’s unwavering commitment to creating more affordable housing options and enhancing livability throughout Long Beach,” as stated by the City of Long Beach. The site for 300 Alamitos, previously a parking lot, lies close to Downtown East Village and benefits from proximity to public transit and essential community services while construction is expected to be completed in late summer 2026.
Expressing a commitment to the city's older residents, Vice Mayor, and Second District Councilwoman Cindy Allen commented on the city's investment in the wellbeing of its aging population, “Our priority is ensuring our community has access to more affordable housing options,” she said, as per the City of Long Beach, advocating for the new development as a mechanism for fostering compassion and inclusivity for Long Beach's elderly.
Purchased for $4.9 million by The California Land Acquisition Fund Holding I, LLC, an arm of Mercy Housing, with the aid of $5 million in state funding, 300 Alamitos has been touted as a significant milestone in Mercy Housing California's mission to provide affordable and supportive housing— a vision shared by co-developer CTY Housing. “The City of Long Beach really stands out as a true partner on affordable housing development and we look forward to bringing more high-quality housing to this locality," said Yasmin Tong, principal and founder of CTY, according to the city's release.
