Los Angeles County pet owners, it's time to get those licenses updated. Starting on January 2, 2025, the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) will be conducting field licensing checks in Castaic's unincorporated areas, ensuring compliance with existing pet licensing and vaccination laws. According to an announcement by DACC, all dogs and cats must meet these requirements, including being microchipped, spayed, or neutered, and having up-to-date rabies vaccinations.
With the state law on their side, DACC's initiative is not merely an exercise in bureaucracy but a means to a safer community and the protection of our furry friends. Per California law, dogs over four months old must be vaccinated against rabies and licensed, and the same goes for cats in Los Angeles County. However, residents have a little breathing room with an amnesty period from December 1, through February 28, 2025, during which late charges and the $40 field enforcement fee will be waived, as reported by the County of Los Angeles.
To avoid the hassle of fines and charges, pet owners can secure a new license or renew an existing one through the DACC website or by visiting local County animal care centers. In addition, DACC provides low-cost vaccination and microchipping clinics, with microchips being offered at just $7.50, as per the County of Los Angeles. For those who meet certain criteria, financial assistance for spay and neuter surgeries is also available, which could alleviate some of the barriers to compliance for pet owners facing
