The Los Angeles Lakers are set to immortalize yet another paragon of their storied franchise, announcing on Monday that a statue of Pat Riley will grace the exterior of the Crypto.com Arena, also known as Star Plaza. Riley, who boasts a legacy of six NBA championships with the team – four as head coach and one each as a player and assistant coach – will become the eight Lakers figure to receive such an accolade. According to FOX LA, the Lakers organization heaped praise on Riley, with team president Jeanie Buss reminiscing, "Pat is a Lakers icon," and highlighting his influence on modern coaching and championship culture.
In a confirmation of Riley's looming bronzed tribute by the Lakers, reports from CBS Sports stated that the statue is anticipated to be completed in 2026, with the date of unveiling still up in the air. Despite his enduring tenure with the Miami Heat as president and minority owner, Riley's contribution to the Lakers' Showtime era appears to have paved the way for his commemorative representation alongside the likes of Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson.
Lakers Governor Jeanie Buss, in a news release obtained by KTLA, spoke about the "obsession and ability" Riley displayed in forging championship-caliber teams, a testament to his prowess and dedication that endures as the organization's blueprint. Not only did Riley spearhead the Lakers' success in the 1980s, but he also amassed an impressive 1,210 wins to 694 losses over his head-coaching career.
Riley's coaching career for the Lakers, which began in the 1981-82 season and saw nine straight 50-plus win seasons, concluded with a Coach of the Year honor in 1989-90, according to NBA.com. Known for his sleek suits and smooth leadership, he steered the franchise to immense success, with his techniques and strategies still being felt in today's coaching landscape. In a video call with Buss confirming the statue's commission, Lakers greats from Riley’s era including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, as well as Riley’s wife Chris, celebrated the announcement.
Pat Riley will not only be remembered for his coaching finesse but also for embracing front-office roles leading to further championships and accolades, including NBA Executive of the Year in 2011. As the first Lakers coach to be immortalized in bronze outside their arena, Riley, whose impact has resonated with fans and players alike, the coach will soon take his place among Lakers immortals, watching over Star Plaza.
