In a recent announcement, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. has indicted a man for an alleged assault on an elderly woman on the Upper West Side, a brutal reminder of the unexpected dangers that can lurk in broad daylight on city streets. The perpetrator, Anthony Melendez, 38, faces charges for punching the 77-year-old in an act that was both unwarranted and forceful, according to a statement from the District Attorney's Office.
The incident in question took place on September 13, when the victim, a woman simply going about her day, returning from the grocery store at around 2:05 p.m., encountered Melendez; he was said to be walking towards her, a large plastic bag in his grasp and a rolling suitcase in tow, before he struck her in the head without provocation, the punch strong enough to dislodge her glasses and cast them onto the street, as revealed by court documents and official statements. An eyewitness, in a display of goodwill, retrieved her glasses and ensured she was safely escorted home.
Charges against Melendez include one count each of Assault in the Second Degree and Assault in the Third Degree, with a pointed focus on public safety and the accountability of those who disrupt it; DA Bragg affirmed, “Manhattanites deserve to feel safe on the streets of New York, and those who jeopardize their safety will be held accountable,” he emphasized the importance of security in everyday encounters on our city's sidewalks, as detailed by the District Attorney's Office.
The arrest of Melendez happened on August 19, with the DA’s office highlighting the suitcase he had during the attack was with him at the time of apprehension, in a case that Assistant D.A. Katelyn Damanis of Trial Bureau 60 is handling, under the guidance of Assistant D.A. Charles Whitt and Executive Assistant D.A. Lisa DelPizzo, a focused team seeking to navigate the pursuit of justice for the victim who is left to bear the physical and psychological repercussions of this attack.
Gratitude was expressed toward the NYPD for their involvement in the case, with specific acknowledgment given to Detective Nicholas Caniglia of the 20th Precinct Detective Squad, their efforts instrumental in bringing the suspect into custody and allowing this case to move forward in the legal system.
