A 21-year-old Marion man, Maurice Williams, was sentenced to 18 months in prison following his guilty plea to a charge of gross sexual imposition, a fourth-degree felony. The conviction stems from an incident on April 11 at a Hobby Lobby store in Marion, where Williams committed a sexual assault near a 19-year-old female employee. WBNS reported this.
Ray Grogan, the Marion County Prosecutor, stated that the conviction and sentencing in this case are intended to demonstrate the community’s fierce intolerance toward such crimes. "The swift conviction and sentencing in this case demonstrate our office's resolve to protect our citizens from criminal behavior," Grogan stated, as reported by WBNS. Williams was also mandated to register as a Tier I sex offender, with the requirement being that he would have to register annually for 15 years once released from prison.
The sentencing took place more than seven months after the crime occurred at a store on McMahon Boulevard. NBC4i coverage specifies that Williams acknowledged his guilt during his court appearance.
In addition to the physical space that the assault violated, Grogan emphasized the broader impact of such acts on community well-being, stating, "Sex crimes like these not only harm individuals but also instill fear in our community," according to a news release obtained by The Marion Star. It was Assistant Prosecutor Chuck Hall who prosecuted the case against Williams.
The case has raised concerns about safety in public spaces and emphasized the justice system's role in addressing sexual misconduct. The verdict and sentence handed down to Williams thus serve as a statement against the perpetration of sex crimes within the Marion community.
