Mentor residents, take notice that the city has issued a Snow Emergency / Street Parking Ban effective today, starting at 6:00 AM. This declaration means no parking on city streets until the ban is lifted, and everyone needs to clear their cars off the roads to make way for snow-clearing operations.
The City of Mentor's plowing efforts extend over 500 lane miles, hitting the main arteries first, like Center Street, Mentor Avenue, and Heisley Road, before moving onto secondary routes and residential areas. However, private drives aren't on the city's to-do list, so individuals are responsible for that bit of snow removal. Neither are state routes such as SR-2 and I-90, which fall under Lake County and the Ohio Department of Transportation's purview.
Preemptive measures are also in place, with bridge decks and major roads getting a brine solution treatment prior to significant snowfall. This all depends on the forecast, and once the snow stops, these roads and secondary routes get a good salting. This highlights the constant battle between safe roads and environmental welfare, as the salt eventually hits our waterways and impacts aquatic life, a fact noted by the EPA.
Not all snow removal is city duty. Clearing sidewalks and driveways is up to the residents, and shoveling snow back onto the streets isn't just bad form—it's breaking the law. And while we're on winter etiquette, if a fire hydrant is buried somewhere on your property, dig it out. In an emergency, those extra seconds can make a world of difference. If a city plow has taken out your mailbox, they have a number you can call for replacement options.
Stay warm, stay safe, and stay informed, Mentor. Your cooperation during these snow events keeps the city's machine running smoothly and ensures we can get through another winter together.
