Michigan gas prices have increased by nine cents from the previous week, with the current average at $3.13 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to AAA. Despite this rise, prices are 21 cents lower than they were a month ago and 18 cents below the average from the same time last year, according to The Detroit News.
With the recent increase, the average cost to fill a 15-gallon tank is around $46, which is $12 less than the peak prices reached last August, according to WLUC. This offers some savings despite the recent rise in gas prices. "Michigan gas prices continue the up and down rollercoaster, with the state average rising nine cents from last week," Adrienne Woodland, a AAA spokesperson stated. If the trend of increased demand combined with tight fuel stocks continues, motorists may experience further price increases, as the balance between supply and demand remains influenced by market factors.
Gas prices across Michigan show regional variation, with higher costs in areas such as Jackson ($3.19), Ann Arbor ($3.18), and Grand Rapids ($3.17), while lower prices can be found in places like Traverse City ($3.00), Marquette ($3.04), and Saginaw ($3.09), according to data from AAA reported by CBS Detroit. To manage fuel expenses, AAA recommends strategies such as consolidating trips, comparing gas prices, paying with cash, reducing vehicle weight, driving more conservatively, and utilizing savings programs like Shell's Fuel Rewards, which provides AAA members with a 5-cent per gallon discount at Shell stations.
According to data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), cited by WLUC, domestic gasoline stockpiles have decreased from 211.3 million barrels to 206.8 million barrels, while gas demand has increased. Production also rose to an average of 10.3 million barrels per day last week. Crude oil inventories grew by 2.1 million barrels, although they remain approximately 4% below the five-year average for this time of year. In addition, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices increased slightly, settling at $68.43 per barrel.
National gas price averages show a slight difference, with GasBuddy reporting $3.02 and AAA citing $3.07. According to Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, states that have recently seen price increases could soon experience declines, possibly bringing the national average below $3 per gallon before Thanksgiving. Currently, 28 states have already reached this price point, a trend observed by The Detroit News.
