Milwaukee residents woke up to winter conditions Thursday morning, as the National Weather Service issued a "Winter Weather Advisory" and a separate "Wind Advisory." Snowfall of 2 to 4 inches was expected, with local totals up to 5 inches along the Kettle Moraine. These advisories warned of snowy and windy conditions for commuters, according to the National Weather Service.
A snow advisory is in effect until noon, with gusty winds lasting until 6 PM CST. Snowfall combined with wind gusts up to 45 mph could reduce visibility, especially during the morning commute. "Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous." Gusty winds may also cause tree branches to fall, as reported by the National Weather Service.
The snow was expected to mix with rain by midday, turning to rain in the afternoon as temperatures rise. However, the early part of the day posed the greatest risk. The National Weather Service advised, "Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving," and reminded pedestrians to watch for icy spots on sidewalks and driveways to prevent accidents.
The National Weather Service's "Hazardous Weather Outlook" shows that the bad weather will not last much longer. From Friday through Wednesday, no hazardous weather is expected, bringing a return to milder conditions typical for autumn in Milwaukee. The forecast predicts a mix of cloudy skies and occasional clear periods, with temperatures mostly in the 30s and 40s. Local authorities are likely relying on winter preparations to help manage any impacts from the weather, as stated by the National Weather Service.
