Coloradans who've grown accustomed to the fluid lines of I-25 South Gap, Central I-70, and US 36 corridors ought to be wary of new fines set to grace their wallets if they decide to nonchalantly weave through express lanes. Starting December 1, drivers caught breaching the solid lines of these express lanes will be issued warnings, a prelude to fines kicking in post-New Year's Eve revelry. A 30-day grace period will allow motorists to quickly adjust before the fines become effective on January 1, 2025, as noted by Douglas County.

For those daring enough to defy the designated entry and exit points to come next month, the roadways' new tech should begin to catch them in the act. Employing a combination of sensors, cameras, and software, the automatic detection system is the same one that's reportedly curbed violations by a whopping 80% on certain stretches of Colorado’s express lanes, shared Tim Hoover, a CDOT spokesman. "This technology has already reduced violations by 80% in the corridors where we’ve deployed it," said Hoover, as per Douglas County. "This means accidents avoided and lives saved." The tech expansion includes several key corridors and is aimed to curtail the dangers brought by these vehicular transgressions.

Crossing over solid lane markers can lead to crashes, a testament to the unpredictability injected into roadways when vehicles unpredictably dart across lanes at differing speeds. With the safety of motorists in mind, these measures are unrolling to keep Coloradans in check and to mitigate the hazards that the less-than-10% of rule-flouting drivers pose to all. "More than 90% of drivers using Express Lanes follow the rules and don’t cross the solid lines. Unfortunately, the small percentage that do weave endanger themselves and everyone else," said Hoover, as obtained by Douglas County.

Fines for violating the Express Lane rules will begin at $75 if paid within 20 days. If the payment is delayed beyond this timeframe, the fine will double to $150.
