The New York Attorney General's Office has launched an investigation into a deadly incident involving a member of the NYPD that took place on Wednesday. As reported by the Office of the Attorney General, a civilian lost her life following an encounter with an NYPD officer in Brooklyn, prompting a probe by the Office of Special Investigation (OSI).
According to preliminary details, the tragedy unfolded on Pennsylvania Avenue near the junction with Riverdale Avenue, where the officer, in an unmarked vehicle, struck a civilian purportedly lying in the street, a sequence of events that led to immediate hospitalization and eventually the civilian's passing. The OSI operates under the mandate of New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, which tasks it with evaluating any incident where it appears a police officer's act or omission may have led to someone's death, whether or not the individual was armed, in custody and regardless of the officer's duty status at the time of the incident.
The OSI follows a procedure that begins with an initial assessment, and if it suggests an officer-caused fatality, a full investigation is launched. Details about the incident and those involved are still limited, and the facts released may change as more information becomes available.
