North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has continued the longstanding tradition of pardoning turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving, sparing two birds named Ethel and Bertha from becoming holiday meals at the annual Turkey Pardon Ceremony. Joined by various leaders from the agriculture and food bank sectors, Cooper underscored a message of thanks, persistence, and charity in the face of communal hardships, notably those wrought by Hurricane Helene.
According to an announcement on the governor's official website, "On Thanksgiving, we take the time to appreciate all we have and thank those who have helped us," Cooper said. He highlighted the contributions of the community, particularly noting Prestage Farms, which has made a substantial donation to MANNA FoodBank intended for those affected in Western North Carolina. The cooperative effort appears not only as an act of seasonal generosity but also, as a fortification against recent adversity.
In remarks made apparent by the NC Poultry Federation's Bob Ford, the significance of turkey farming to the North Carolina economy was brought to the fore. "North Carolina is ranked # 2 in turkey production," said Ford describing the industry's robust integration into the state's economic fabric and emphasizing the importance of the Thanksgiving season for those involved.
Upon their reprieve, Ethel and Bertha are slated for retirement at Naylor Family Farm in Fuquay-Varina, as documented by the ceremony details, the hens will comfortably live out their days removed from the production line that propels North Carolina's agricultural prowess. By the outpouring spirit of Thanksgiving, Prestage Farms, as reported, announced their form of clemency, by donating nearly 3,000 turkey breasts to MANNA FoodBank, a gesture that translates into thousands of holiday meals for families still grappling with the impacts of a natural disaster.
MANNA FoodBank's CEO, Claire Neal acknowledged the generosity and the difference these donations make. "As we continue recovering from the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene, this donation of turkey breasts will ensure that thousands of families across the 16 counties we serve can share a holiday meal with their loved ones," Neal expressed gratitude for the support which helps in conveying not only sustenance but also the warmth of togetherness in these times.
