Ohio's commitment to student well-being has taken a concrete form with the inauguration of Warren G. Harding High School's Student Recreation and Wellness Center. Governor Mike DeWine was on-site to cut the ribbon for the new 136,000-square-foot, $36 million facility, which aims to support students' physical, social-emotional, and academic health. In a statement obtained by the Governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine's office explained, "What’s special about this facility is how it blends every aspect of student wellness together in one building."

Funding for the center came from federal grant dollars, including a $16 million allocation to the Warren City Schools by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce. The facility boasts numerous amenities, including a 60-yard turf, state-of-the-art fitness equipment, and spaces designed for socializing and focused skill development in fields like robotics and e-sports. Warren City School District leaders joined Governor DeWine for the tour, emphasizing the center’s importance in fostering a well-rounded educational experience.

The center will soon house a student lounge, set to open in spring 2025, where students can enjoy healthy foods and learn culinary skills. Additionally, the planned on-campus school-based health center (SBHC), operated by Akron Children’s Pediatrics, will offer medical services to students and community members under 21. "Having the school-based health center here has the power to be truly transformative," said Governor DeWine, "I am a big believer in having public health clinics right in our schools."

The Governor has advocated for expanding SBHCs across Ohio, citing their positive influence on academic outcomes like attendance and grades. Warren City Schools Superintendent and CEO Steve Chiaro expressed gratitude, stating via Governor of Ohio Mike DeWine's website, "This is a great day for the Warren City School District, this is a great day for the City of Warren, and – most importantly – this is a great day to our nearly 5,000 students." The Warren City Schools Board of Education President Patricia Limperos commented, "It’s a return on investment that has limitless potential."

The facility embodies a larger vision for fostering community well-being. Warren Mayor Doug Franklin described the center as a hub of inspiration and a testament to nurturing students' minds, bodies, and spirits. The opening signifies a significant commitment to the youth and the potential for far-reaching impacts on the community.
