Detroit is set to host a game between the Minnesota Frost and New York Sirens as part of the Professional Women's Hockey League's (PWHL) "Takeover Tour." The game will take place on March 16, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena, CBS News Detroit reports.
The PWHL's return to Detroit is significant, as it mirrors last year's record-setting event, where 13,736 fans attended a game at Little Caesars Arena, setting a new attendance record for U.S. professional women's hockey. Detroit will be the only city to host a neutral-site game during the league’s second season. Additionally, the league plans to expand by adding up to two new franchises for the 2025-26 season, with Detroit among the cities being considered, according to Amy Scheer, PWHL Senior Vice President of Business Operations, in an interview with WXYZ.
The "Takeover Tour," covering nine cities over 84 days, is a strategic effort to expand the league's presence across North America. As reported by MLive, cities such as Seattle, Vancouver, Denver, Quebec City, Buffalo, Raleigh, St. Louis, and Detroit will be part of this landmark series of professional women’s hockey games.
Support for women's professional sports in Detroit is increasing, with a grassroots initiative advocating for a permanent team in the city. As the PWHL eyes expansion, Scheer expressed the importance of selecting the "right market size, right fan base, right facilities, right economic opportunity" for potential new teams. The enthusiasm from cities eager to host PWHL games has been "incredibly encouraging", Scheer told CBS News Detroit, emphasizing the growth and visibility this tour will offer to the league's players and fans alike.
Tickets for the highly anticipated March game will go on pre-sale Thursday, with general sales starting Friday at 10 a.m. In addition to Detroit's strong attendance record, other U.S. cities like Pittsburgh, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia have expressed interest, making them potential locations for future PWHL teams. The tour will officially begin on January 5 in Seattle, marking the start of the 2025 season and a new phase for the league.
