A raccoon in Anne Arundel County has tested positive for rabies, triggering an alert by local health officials for any possible human or pet exposures in the Pasadena area. The Anne Arundel County Department of Health, concerned about potential contact with the rabid animal found in the vicinity of Seamore Street and Marco Drive, is issuing a warning for residents in the Cedarwood Cove Community, as reported by Eye On Annapolis.
Yesterday marked the discovery of the infected raccoon, which tested positive for rabies, making this the second alert in a week in the same county. As the Daily Voice detailed, this comes via an announcement from the county's Department of Health. Rabies, notable for its debilitating and often fatal impact on warm-blooded animals, is transmittable through bites and scratches, and symptoms in animals can include an array of troubling behaviors such as aggression, an unfounded fear of water, or even the typically nocturnal species being active during daylight hours.
Authorities emphasize the urgency of seeking preventive treatment if an individual or pet had any contact with the rabies-infected raccoon or if a pet has been discovered with unexplained injuries. The health alert also echoes advice about rabies prevention and the necessity of prompt treatment. The County Health Department urges those who may have encountered the infected raccoon to contact 410-222-7254 during regular business hours or at 443-481-3140 after hours for assistance.
