Democratic Congressman Ritchie Torres has taken a firm stand against New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, asserting their role in a violent stabbing incident that left three New Yorkers dead. In a statement to CBS News, Torres labeled their actions as complicit, claiming a systemic failure allowed the assailant, recently released from jail, to commit the murders.
Ramon Rivera, described as a man with a significant criminal background and acknowledged mental health issues, was linked to the stabbing attacks in Manhattan on Monday last week, according to police. Despite a previous assault on a correctional officer and a transfer to Bellevue's psychiatric ward, Rivera was released early for good behavior. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for City Hall told CBS News, "Ramon Rivera's ability to roam our streets freely is disturbing, which is why Mayor Adams was one of the first to question it publicly. The mayor has also been sounding the alarm about the revolving door of criminals being let back out onto the streets - after our police officers arrest them - for years now. We are in the process of reviewing this case internally, and appreciate the congressmember's partnership as we work to keep New York City safe for all."
Challenging the effectiveness of current leadership, Torres criticized both the state and city for their handling of crime and public safety. In a statement to Eyewitness News, he expressed dismay over the early release, calling for the dismissal of those in the Department of Corrections responsible. Torres described the case as a tragic failure of New York City's correctional and judicial systems, according to a spokesperson from the Governor's office.
The congressman's criticism went beyond the stabbing spree, addressing broader governance issues and the influence of Donald Trump in New York as a sign of failed leadership. In this context, Torres has hinted at a potential run for governor, starting a "listening tour" to assess public sentiment. He told CBS News that his decision on a possible 2026 candidacy will come around mid-2025.
