Richmond has witnessed a calamity of unreserved proportions as over 40 residents stand displaced following a destructive fire at The Fairway at Bellevue apartments. This disturbing event unfolded around 9 p.m. on a Thursday evening when a towering blaze took hold of a building housing 20 units, as reported by FOX 26 Houston. According to witnesses, flames and heavy smoke revealed the severity of the situation before the fire department's arrival. All residents, thankfully, were evacuated safely without injuries.
Among those affected are Manny Munoz and Ophelia Cantu, a couple expecting a child, who lost not only their home; but also baby essentials recently received at their gender reveal party. The Richmond community, in the face of this disaster, has demonstrated a profound spirit of solidarity. Munoz and Cantu hosted a benefit to raise funds by selling brisket sandwich meals, which saw neighbors and strangers alike converging to donate and assist the couple. “Every time they bring my baby stuff, I get so emotional. It’s just amazing,” Cantu told KHOU 11 News in the recount of their experience and the community's response.
The Richmond Fire Department, which faced challenges in containing the blaze as it reignited multiple times over the course of the night, remains on site until around 4:30 a.m., still has yet to determine the cause of the fire. The Red Cross has stepped in to provide crucial support services for those who now face the daunting challenge of rebuilding their lives. "Really, the big thing though is the community that we have. It sucks that it takes something like this to happen, but it really shows how much people come together when you need them," resident Josh Dietrich shared with FOX 26 Houston.
The apartment management has called upon the public for donations to support the displaced residents. Essentials such as water, food, clothing, and toiletries can be dropped off at the leasing office, as noted in a post by the Richmond Fire Department on Facebook.
