Community members and students gathered during a candlelight vigil yesterday to honor Cortez McConer Jr., a 16-year-old whose body was found in a heavily wooded area near Rockford. McConer had been missing for three weeks before the discovery of his body, which police and the Kent County Medical Examiner's Office have ruled an accidental drowning, as reported by WOODTV.
The vigil held at Godwin Heights High School witnessed an outpouring of grief from over 200 attendees, the school principal Chad Conklin highlighted McConer's joy and kindness, stating "He was a beacon of light bringing joy, kindness and connection with everyone around him, whether through his laughter, his compassion, or his unique ability to make others feel valued," according to a WOODTV interview. Meanwhile, Superintendent William Fetterhoff informed the school community through a letter about the available support services for grieving students, advising parents to reach out for assistance provided by the Crisis Response Team.
WWMT detailed the events leading up to McConer's disappearance, noting that he fled from police together with two friends, one account adding the event occurred after the trio was spotted in a stolen vehicle near a McDonald's in Rockford. The disappearance of McConer puzzled law enforcement who initially considered that he might be hiding to avoid police-related trouble, with Grand Rapids Police Department Chief Eric Winstrom expressing, "It is possible that Cortez is actively hiding, believing he is in trouble with the police," as per WWMT.
MLive further provided insight into the tragic events, noting that McConer apparently wandered through the woods, crossed a creek, and eventually encountered a pond where it is suspected that hypothermia and exhaustion contributed to his accidental drowning. Police Chief Eric Winstrom stated, "This is not the outcome we had hoped for," offering condolences on behalf of the Grand Rapids Police Department, the shared sentiments coming from a community grappling with the loss of a young life.
