San Antonio residents are buzzing with excitement as the city unveils its latest community asset, the Barbara “Robbie” Robinette Community & Senior Center, dedicated to fostering a robust connection between generations. The ribbon-cutting ceremony opened the doors to a state-of-the-art facility aimed to serve as a wellness and educational haven for locals over 60, while simultaneously offering programs that cater to a younger crowd. According to a city press release, the center will operate six days a week, with the seniors’ schedule from Monday to Friday and opportunities for all ages expanding into Saturdays.

Financed as a part of the 2017-2022 Bond Project, with a budget of $14.2 million, this expansive 17,000-square-foot center is set to cater directly to enrich the lives of San Antonio’s older adult demographic. The Department of Human Services will manage the facility, providing activities specifically designed to help maintain an active and engaged lifestyle. As Mayor Ron Nirenberg told the city's news outlet, "The Robinette Center will provide an opportunity for the development of powerful partnerships between our youth and older adult communities." He envisaged the center as a "gateway" to intergenerational connectivity within the city.

The center isn't just for older residents, though. It boasts a plethora of activities managed by the Parks & Recreation Department, ranging from fitness and nature programs to year-round youth sports leagues. Councilmember Dr. Adriana Rocha Garcia emphasized the center's role as "a neighborhood hub for older adults and youth to make friends, pursue hobbies, and maintain their overall wellbeing," as reported by the city's news outlet.

City Manager Erik Walsh shared his pride in the initiative, stating, "The City of San Antonio is proud of and committed to providing opportunities that empower youth and older adults to lead healthy and active lives," as noted in the city's press release. The class roster is impressive, featuring everything from exercise to dance and technology—all curated to keep up with actively evolving interests and skills across age groups. Alongside these offerings, the center also plans to offer complimentary transportation options for seniors living within a five-mile radius, thereby ensuring easy access to the facility for those who cannot drive.

At the heart of this new establishment are amenities such as a gymnasium, a dining room, and a variety of classrooms. The DHS Senior Services Division's mentioned programming includes health screenings, wellness education, and a diversity of recreational activities like Lotería and movie screenings, ensuring that the mind and body wellness of San Antonio's senior community receive thoughtful attention.
