Harris County has elected Sean Teare as its new District Attorney, with Teare narrowly defeating Republican Dan Simons. Teare received 50.82% of the vote, while Simons earned 49.18%, according to unofficial results. The close race followed a highly competitive campaign and Teare's victory over incumbent DA Kim Ogg in the March primaries.
Teare, with 11 years of experience at the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, campaigned on reforming the criminal justice system while ensuring community safety. "This victory is for everyone who believes in safer neighborhoods and a justice system that works for all," Teare said in a statement to Click2Houston. His campaign focused on addressing reproductive rights, gun violence prevention, and the county's criminal court backlog, aiming to tackle these issues with empathy and efficiency.
According to Click2Houston, before the results were announced, Teare and Simons shared a handshake, signaling a mutual understanding of the need to improve the DA's office. "Good luck tonight, seriously. Either way it goes, I think it’s gonna be a much better office than it was," Simons said, a sentiment Teare echoed. Teare, who resigned from his position in the DA's office in February 2023, had expressed frustrations with the administration’s direction and a desire to make a bigger impact, as he explained in an exclusive interview with KPRC 2 Investigates reporter Joel Eisenbaum.
Teare emphasized the need for change in the Harris County DA's office, pointing to low morale and a toxic work environment as key reasons for his candidacy. He expressed the belief that improving the system was impossible under current leadership, which prioritized personal interests over public service. With his victory, Teare is now poised to implement his vision for criminal justice reform in Harris County, as mentioned in the FOX 26 Houston report.
While Harris County chose its new DA, Texas saw fierce competition in several key races, including the U.S. Senate battle between Ted Cruz and Colin Allred, sheriff elections in Fort Bend and Harris counties, and the race for Texas Congressional District 18 following Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s passing.
