Pro-Nazi demonstrators gathered outside the American Legion Post 141 in Livingston County last Saturday, where "The Diary of Anne Frank" was being performed by the Fowlerville Community Theatre. The protesters, carrying Nazi flags, were seen near the venue, as reported by Michigan Advance. Bobby Brite, a former commander of Post 141, captured video showing individuals across the street from the post waving the flags.

Residents and those connected to the theater production were visibly affected by the demonstration, especially as it targeted a play that honors the memory of a young Jewish victim of the Holocaust. The group also gathered in downtown Fowlerville, chanting slogans and displaying flags. The Livingston County Sheriff's Office, which responded to the scene, confirmed that approximately ten individuals, believed to be in their 20s, were asked to leave the Legion's parking lot. They complied and relocated across the street to continue their protest. According to WLNS, the demonstrators left the area once filming began.

"They are some of the most cowardly people I’ve ever met," Brite told The Detroit News, commenting on the events of the evening. There were even reports of chants such as "Anne Frank was a whore," adding to the already palpable tensions. Furthermore, a sheriff's office statement relayed that after the group was confronted, "Nothing physical transpired and ultimately the parties involved separated."

The location of these demonstrations is significant, as Howell and the surrounding areas have dealt with extremist ideologies in the past, including KKK activity in the 70s and 80s, as well as more recent incidents involving hate speech. Community leaders have worked to address these issues, as reported by Michigan Advance.
