The City of Sterling Heights is geared up to honor its veterans with an annual Veterans Day Ceremony, this time with a special addition. Scheduled for Nov. 11, at 11 a.m., the event will also mark the unveiling of the city's first Gulf War Memorial, placed thoughtfully in the Veterans Memorial Garden adjacent to the city's municipal buildings. According to details shared on the city's official website, this new feature aims to pay homage to those who served in the Gulf War, as well as other recent conflicts such as the War in Afghanistan and War in Iraq.
In an expression of the city's reverence and recognition of its service members' sacrifices, Mayor Michael C. Taylor emphasized the significance of the event stating, "We gather each Veterans Day to honor those who have selflessly defended our country’s freedom," a sentiment captured on the city's webpage. To eagerly commemorate this day, visitors will not only witness the traditional 21-gun salute presented by the Sterling Heights Police Honor Guard but will also have the opportunity to directly engage with history through interactive elements embedded in the new memorial.
The ceremony will include speeches from Mayor Taylor, local veterans, and city officials. It will be presided over by 41-A District Court Judge Stephen Sierawski, uniting community members in a reflecting and respecting solidarity. Noteworthy in the memorial's design are bronze medallions and ceramic tiles, the latter furnished with QR codes to facilitate a deeper understanding of the conflicts honored.
A show of support from a local business comes in the form of complimentary refreshments provided by Scooter’s Coffee, who will also extend their generosity to veterans with a free medium drink offer at their Sterling Heights location on the day. The city announcement encourages attendees to partake in these tokens of appreciation as they gather together for this poignant event.
