Two teenagers became the latest victims of gun violence in Cleveland's East Side, sustaining injuries after being shot near the intersection of East 116th Street and Miles Avenue on Sunday night. According to Cleveland19, the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. when an unidentified vehicle approached the 15-year-old and 16-year-old as they walked through the neighborhood and opened fire.
As emergency personnel responded to the scene, Cleveland EMS rushed the 16-year-old to a local hospital with serious injuries, while the 15-year-old suffered minor injuries, per a statement obtained by WKYC. In the chaotic aftermath of the shooting, a street minister, Tracy Bush, prompted by a past haunted by similar violence, posted a sign near the crime scene, hoping to deter further retaliatory violence.
"I'm just a messenger," Bush told News 5 Cleveland as he expressed his dedication to curbing gun violence, which included a personal experience that "penetrated my soul and it hurt my heart so much because one of them was a friend of mine." The shootings have ignited local discussions on the need for proactive community action, with area resident Carmaletta Bolden urging for more opportunities to engage youths constructively. "That's fine but what about being proactive and instead of reactive why are we not coming up with opportunities for these kids to do something other than to hang out in the street," Bolden said.
