The holiday season is upon us, which means lavish meals and, inevitably, a lot of waste in the form of fats, oils, and grease. It's traditionally a season that burdens our sewers and streets, but White Settlement Community Services is providing a proactive solution to this slippery issue.
In a recent social media post, White Settlement Community Services raised awareness about the harmful effects of pouring grease down the drain. They stressed, "They can stick to the insides of pipes and, over time, turn into hard clogs that can lead to messy sewer backups." The post went on to describe the unpleasant repercussions of such blockages, including "serious overflow issues in our streets and streams," a scenario that hits home for anyone dreading traffic jams and road closures due to unforeseen repairs.
The Holiday Grease Roundup—an initiative aimed at recycling these greasy leftovers into something far more beneficial. This initiative, which started last Wednesday and will run through January 12, is a combined effort with the North Central Texas Council of Governments, the Wastewater And Treatment Education Roundtable, and American BioSource.
White Settlement Community Services elaborates, "The used cooking oil and grease collected will be turned into biodiesel or biogas!" By harnessing this waste product, the program offers a twofold advantage: reducing landfill contributions and generating clean energy. This initiative is not only a call to action for the White Settlement community, it's a blueprint, for how practical recycling efforts can pave the way for sustainable living.
