The City of Wyoming began construction on the Godwin Mercado on Tuesday, a new marketplace located next to the former General Motors stamping plant at 301 36th Street. According to FOX 17, the Godwin Mercado is planned to serve as a community space for events such as farmers markets, artisan gatherings, and private functions like graduation parties.

The site, covering 6,000 square feet and with a project cost of $6 million, is expected to revitalize the city center by creating a pedestrian-friendly environment. City Manager John Shay underlined this expectation to WOODTV, stating, "This is just going to provide that catalyst and the momentum to achieve that vision." The construction coincides with efforts by Corewell Health and their partners to transform neighboring lots into business hubs, bolstering the economic landscape with high-paying jobs.

The marketplace, reported by MLive, is an investment funded through public and private means, including grants and property sales. With expected completion in August 2025 and an anticipated opening in the spring of 2026, the marketplace will feature indoor and outdoor amenities for a variety of community-oriented events. Krashawn Martin, the director of parks and recreation for the city, conveyed that there's a high demand for such multifunctional spaces within the community.

The decision to name the marketplace Godwin Mercado, in recognition of the local neighborhood and its cultural diversity, sparked some debate within the city council. Some members expressed concerns about whether the name would be inclusive of the broader community, as highlighted by council member Sheldon DeKryger's remarks cited by MLive: "I’m a little concerned about the name being Godwin, especially as we’re trying to put Wyoming on the map." Following community outreach and feedback from over 6,000 individuals, 99% of whom supported the name, the council decided to proceed with Godwin Mercado but agreed that future naming endeavors should involve more council participation.
