The Yolo County Central Landfill will pause operations on Thursday, November 28, in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday. As reported by Yolo County News, the closure also encompasses the Blue Barn Thrift Store and the Household Hazardous Waste facility. Regular hours will resume Friday, with the landfill being accessible from 6:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Residents intent on deep-frying their turkeys are advised to properly dispose of cooking oil. The Household Hazardous Waste program, starting back Saturday, November 30, will accept used cooking oil to prevent potentially hazardous environmental impacts. As explicitly stated by the Yolo County, "Cooking oil should never be poured down the drain or into storm drains, as it can cause significant environmental damage." This initiative aligns with the landfill's effort to encourage waste reduction.

Due to the Thanksgiving observance, Waste Management, Inc. and Recology services in Yolo County will experience a one-day service delay. If trash, recycling, or organics collection falls on a Thursday, it will be moved to Friday, and the usual Friday pickups will shift to Saturday. For residents needing to verify their collection schedule, Waste Management can be reached at (530) 662-8748 and Recology at (530) 756-4646.

In a move to actively reduce food waste during this season of plenty, landfill staff urge the community to think sustainably. "To minimize what ends up in the landfill, consider encouraging friends and family to bring reusable containers for leftovers," recommends Yolo County News. Freezing surplus food, donating to local food banks, or repurposing leftovers into new meals are other suggested strategies. For food scraps that can't be otherwise used, the county urges residents to make sure to deposit them into organics carts for proper composting instead of contributing to landfill mass.
