Swensons Drive-In, an Akron culinary institution since 1934, is set to reopen its original West Akron location at 40 S. Hawkins Avenue this Saturday after recovering from an unexpected accident in late November. According to WKYC, a vehicle crashed into the Swensons building on Nov. 24, resulting in a temporary closure but not halting its service, thanks to an onsite food truck that continued to dish out its fan-favorite Galley Boys.
The reopening celebrates resilience and community. Swensons has planned to give "small gifts" to guests who visit the lot this Saturday while supplies last. The celebration commences at 11 a.m. - as noted by FOX8. In a release, Swensons mentioned they are "ready to spread holiday cheer" and gratitude to the community that supported them through the unexpected event.
It shocked the community when a 23-year-old woman drove her car into the flagship Swensons restaurant at a reported high speed. In an interview with the Akron Beacon Journal, President Jeff Flowers, with 23 years of experience with Swensons, admitted that such an incident was unprecedented, "We've had people park close to the building, then put their car in drive instead of park and bump into the building. But we've never, never had something like this." Thankfully, only minor injuries were reported among the staff, while the driver was cited for failure to control and reckless operation.
Despite the damage and the challenges, Swensons maintained a sense of continuity for its patrons using a food truck to serve its traditional menu. The quick adaptability demonstrates the strength of the local chain, which now boasts 20 locations throughout Ohio.
