Mayor Mike Duggan's latest move to nominate Alexa Bush as Detroit's new Planning Director marks a strategic step for the city's future development. Bush, with a robust background that intertwines community engagement with urban design, is set to replace Antoine Bryant starting January 13th, pending approval by the City Council, or after 30 days of her nomination, as stipulated by the City Charter. She is no stranger to the Planning and Development Department, having served for six years and played a pivotal role in its post-bankruptcy reconstruction efforts.
Having worked at the Kresge Foundation as a program officer for the last three years, Bush returns to city governance with experience that's expected to enrich Detroit's planning initiatives. Wrongly placed while overseeing neighborhood planning for five Strategic Neighborhood Fund areas, Bush was instrumental in creating the four-pillar framework within the Reimagining the Civic Commons initiative, leading projects that would not just reshape the landscape but the lives within Fitzgerald neighborhood.
Duggan didn't hold back in expressing his confidence in Bush's capabilities and her rapport with the city government and community stakeholders. In a statement obtained by the official City of Detroit news outlet, he stated, "Alexa was critical to the early rebuilding of the Planning Department and some of its most important neighborhood initiatives. She also has tremendous respect within city government and in the community." Bush's reputation and prior contributions to Detroit's neighborhoods have set the stage for her new role.
Bush's track record extends beyond local efforts, having worked with national entities such as the SmithGroup and SPUR, a testament to her expansive understanding of urban planning. It's evident that even with her project work on climate resilience and sustainable urban development, her roots remain undeniably tethered to Detroit, as she comes from three generations of Detroiters. According to the City of Detroit news release, Bush is "honored to have the opportunity to join the talented and hardworking team at the city and continue to strengthen the Planning and Development Department’s role in providing a platform for resident engagement about the city’s future."
