Union Station in Washington, D.C., was the scene of confusion and frustration for dozens of Amtrak passengers left behind by the Northeast Regional 66 train last Thursday evening. Scheduled to depart at 10:15 p.m. bound for New York’s Penn Station, the train surprisingly pulled away without the travellers, who had gathered expectantly for their post-Christmas journeys, WTOP reported.
The confounded passengers found themselves stranded after a miscommunication resulted in the train's premature departure. An Amtrak employee, believed to be the station manager, was quoted in a video saying, "(The train operator) left possibly thinking there was no one getting on," as per WTOP. It is still unclear whether the train ever came to a proper stop at the platform for boarding.
Adding to the passenger's grievances was an Amtrak subreddit post that went viral, highlighting the story of over 100 people missing their connection. The post claimed the Northeast Regional train actually left the station without any of the waiting passengers, who were, at the obedience of prompted instructions, still queued for boarding when the train was supposed to leave, reported by WJLA. The gate designated for boarding never opened, a situation that left many questioning the absence of Amtrak staff to facilitate their entry onto the platform.
Amtrak has since issued an apology, acknowledging the inconveniences caused by the apparent miscommunication. In addition to reimbursement for hotels and food, as well as ticket expenses, the transport service promised free accommodation on subsequent trains departing the following morning. "Amtrak apologized for what it calls a 'miscommunication' and said it would reimburse for hotels, food and for the price of the ticket for the trip," according to a WTOP statement. The company also confirmed it is investigating the claims brought forward by the passengers,
Details of the incident were further illuminated by a post made by one stranded traveler on Reddit, who shared their ticket and story with the Washington Post. The passenger described that the doors to the train platform remained closed, with no staff to provide access or information. As the matter unfolds, it remains a case study in the necessity of clear communication and reliable coordination in public transportation amidst the hustle of holiday travel.
