An Archdale man is facing a slew of charges including insurance fraud and perjury after North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey disclosed the details of the arrest, Darrius Moore, 35, of 224 Stratford Road, stands accused of using fabricated documents and false statements in an effort to illicitly claim nearly $11,000 from a renters' insurance policy.
According to the North Carolina Department of Insurance, Moore's alleged deceit unfolded between March 28 and June 24, where he presented misleading information about property damage and food spoilage caused by multiple household mishaps, he claimed a water leak, a power surge, and an outage not only spoiled his groceries but also led to personal property damages that forced him to incur the costs of a 23-night hotel stay.
The array of felonies Moore is charged with includes four counts of insurance fraud, three counts of obtaining property by false pretense, two counts of forgery among others—detailing intentional deception for financial gain; for instance, he reportedly submitted a bogus receipt for a chafing dish and provided fabricated statements about spoiled food items such as a watermelon and ice cream.
"Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," Commissioner Causey said, pointing out the broader impact such deceit has on the pockets of honest citizens, due to increased insurance premiums caused by fraudulent activities like those Moore is accused of; urging the public to report any suspicions of insurance fraud, he highlighted avenues for North Carolinians to anonymously report white-collar crimes, as per North Carolina Department of Insurance.
Having been arrested on December 15, Moore was later released on a $2,500 secured bond, with a court date scheduled for January 14, 2025, in Guilford County District Court, signaling the start of legal proceedings in a case that seems, based on the charges, to speak to a deliberate and complex effort to deceive and profit unlawfully from an insurance entity designed to aid, not be exploited.
