Austin Police Arrest Nine in Shoplifting Crackdown at Lakeline MallSource: Austin Police Department

In a concerted effort to implement law enforcement action against rampant shoplifting, the Austin Police Department (APD) conducted an operation that has culminated in multiple arrests. On December 5, the APD's North Metro Tactical Unit and North Criminal Investigation Division launched a "shoplifting blitz" in the Lakeline Mall area, with officers actively apprehending suspects and recovering stolen goods.

The operation led to police responding to four active cases and making nine custodial arrests. Charges ranged from Engaging in Organized Criminal Activity to Possession of a Controlled Substance, according to an official statement from the Austin Police Department. These efforts also brought to light suspects involved in ongoing cases with local retailers and recovered roughly $7,500 in stolen property.

APD detailed several incidents, including one at Kohl’s where a group of four were thwarted attempting to take merchandise concealed within a baby stroller. Another arrest at Lowe's involved Javier Rios, apprehended with stolen goods and outstanding larceny warrants. At a nearby Target, an attempt by Donovan Clausen to steal electronics was foiled, which led to the recovery of additional stolen items and narcotics upon his detention.

The string of arrests included Christina Shell, a 44-year-old female, facing charges for Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance and Martin Morales, intercepted after leaving behind a cart full of merchandise at Target. The swift action by APD is a testament to its commitment to addressing theft and ensuring safety and security for businesses and the community.
