The Austin Parks and Recreation Department calls on locals to play a part in the development of the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center. This initiative seeks to capture the collective voice of the community, shaping spaces that represent the rich, diverse cultural history and look forward to future aspirations. Insights gathered from community meetings and online surveys will be pivotal in directing how the museum evolves to serve both present-day and forthcoming generations, as reported by the City of Austin.
Commencing Phase 1 of the museum's expansion, as delineated in the Facility Expansion Plan ratified by the Council in 2021, the project has been segmented into two stages. Pivoting around the museum's functionality, Phase 1a investigates the transition of the administrative zone to a fresh upper echelon, freeing up space near the main entrance for enhanced community-centered activities. Phase 1b is proposed to embellish the museum's exterior, introducing outdoor learning environments, public restroom renovations, and a verdant event lawn adorned with a sheltered pavilion, as per the City of Austin. The aspirations of these developments await the public's input.
Those eager to stay informed on project developments can sign up for updates. The call to engage is part of a broader dialogue taking place within City Council District 1, emphasizing the value of community participation in cultural and historical institutions.
Community feedback can be voiced at the upcoming open house community meetings. The first, an online gathering via Zoom, will convene on Saturday, December 7, from 10–11:30 a.m. Interested participants can register for the meeting here. An in-person session is also queued, set to unfold on Tuesday, December 10, from 4:30–6 p.m. at the center of the dialogue, the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center, located at 1165 Angelina St.
