Baltimore's seemingly never-ending dance with unpredictable weather continues as the National Weather Service tracks a low-pressure system headed our way. According to the National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC, today's forecast features a stubborn warm front lingering around, with accompanying rainfall clearing east of the Chesapeake by 8 AM. But hold on to those umbrellas. Patchy drizzle could be in the cards throughout the day amidst overcast skies.
Don't get your hopes up for those yearning for a glimmer of sunlight—the weak pressure gradient will do little to mix things up, trapping low clouds overhead. The central Shenandoah Valley and southern Maryland are the only potential oases with temperatures breaching the 50s. However, the northwestern pockets may feel an autumnal chill, struggling even to hit the 40-degree mark.
As Monday evening approaches, brace yourselves for another round of rainfall, especially near the Pennsylvania border, as the southward-reaching arms of precipitation remain somewhat up in the air. The weather report warns that gusty winds could pick up overnight, mainly on higher terrain, and we might see some fog if the stable ground layer persists.
The cold front trailing off early Tuesday seems to have a silver lining, with temperatures tipped to climb into the mid-50s to mid-60s. Yet, the week's weather plot thickens with another low-pressure system skirting Baltimore midweek. The forecast added that this system will bring in a fresh wave of rain and gusty winds, especially in the mountains, as the cold front bids adieu Wednesday night.
Regarding air travel, IFR to LIFR conditions could affect visibility across the terminals for much of the TAF (Terminal Aerodrome Forecasts) period. However, improvement should come after Tuesday morning with the cold front's passage ushering in more precise conditions. Over the waters, mariners have a Small Craft Advisory to heed from 10 PM tonight to 6 AM Tuesday for specific zones, signaling rougher sailing under increased winds.
The weekend brings a little joy on the weather front. Temperatures are expected to plummet well below normal, setting the stage for what could be the coldest surge of the season so far. Those hitting the outdoors between Friday and Sunday will face biting wind chills, potentially dropping to single digits at times.
