The latest development in Baltimore sees a major stride in the collaboration between the Baltimore Police Department, the City of Baltimore, and the Fraternal Order of Police as they have reached a new labor contract agreement. Announced as approved on Wednesday during the Board of Estimates Meeting, this contract is set to increase officer salaries, provide bonuses for eligible staff, and introduce the David Shift for better coverage during peak hours. As stated in a recent announcement from the Baltimore Police Department, "This contract is a significant step in our commitment to supporting our officers and retaining the best and brightest in our department."
The city's law enforcement spokesperson conveyed that the new contract will also quickly provide additional police officers during evening hours when calls often spike. Police Commissioner Richard Worley emphasized the contract's role in offering, per the Baltimore Police Department news release, "the essential resources and fair compensation" necessary for the officers to serve the community effectively. Mayor Brandon M. Scott also expressed his approval, noting, "This new contract agreement raises salaries and strengthens our efforts to retain the brave men and women of our Police Department so that we can continue doing the important work of better serving the residents of Baltimore."
Officers can expect to see the agreement's terms implemented soon, with one-time bonuses granted alongside salary increases. In addition to financial incentives, the pact will expand benefits, encompassing broader union representation and a return to rotating shifts designed to increase work-life balance and operational efficacy.
