The Baltimore region is bracing for diverse weather conditions as a low-pressure system intensifies, delivering rain, snow, and gusty winds across different parts of the area. According to the National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC, residents can expect periods of rain throughout the day, transitioning to snow in the Appalachian region later on and prompting a Winter Weather Advisory for those areas favored by the cold.
While the rains are deemed mainly beneficial, with close to 1.5 inches anticipated east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the flooding potential is minimal and lower than predictions from the previous day. Severe weather risk has also diminished, with the possibility of thunder or two being confined to Smith Island, VA, and Maryland’s eastern shore. Yet, the main concern for today includes the falling temperatures that accompany the strong post-frontal winds with gusts that could reach up to 40 mph, especially at higher elevations. Thus, a Wind Advisory focuses mainly on the Appalachians and the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Looking ahead into the week, Thursday and Friday are slated to bring much colder temperatures and brisk conditions under a cycle of dry westerly flow where winds are forecast to diminish by Friday as the high-pressure center moves closer. At the same time, Saturday sees high pressure in a strong area moving northeast, keeping rain chances at bay until later in the evening when a newfound wintry mix could emerge along and west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Marine conditions have similarly escalated, with a Gale Warning issued today and this evening, where the strongest marine winds are anticipated between the hours of 19Z and 02Z, after which a craft Advisory will continue through Thursday night. Coastal flooding also poses limited risks, particularly for sensitive sites like Annapolis, which may reach minor flood stage during this afternoon's high tide cycle before receding soon after signs point toward minor mitigation measures being implemented, such as a Coastal Flood Advisory for Anne Arundel County being considered for later on this morning.
