The intense battle against a massive fire at Camp Small in Baltimore has ended, with the flames finally extinguished after days of effort by the Baltimore City Fire Department. The fire started last Thursday at the wood recycling plant and was contained within 24 hours. However, it continued to smoke through the weekend before being fully put out last night. Per WMAR2 News, the event notably disrupted traffic, shutting down I-83 and impacting local infrastructure such as the Maryland Zoo and Medfield Elementary due to air quality concerns.
The specific cause of the fire remains under scrutiny, though the facility's history could offer clues. This incident marks the fourth fire in five years at the Camp Small plant, a zero-waste recycling center operated by the Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks. According to CBS News Baltimore, it is believed to have started in a storage area filled with towering stacks of wood material. Over a hundred firefighters and 12 engine companies were deployed to manage the blaze.
No reported injuries were sustained throughout the ordeal, a testament to the expertise and coordination of the responding teams. The immediate containment efforts were crucial in preventing damage to nearby buildings and roads.
