The Bastrop County Sheriff's Office has ceased its request for assistance in the identification of two individuals initially deemed persons of interest in a murder case involving an elderly citizen, Simon Castillo. As reported by CBS Austin, public collaboration, along with the diligent use of social media, has led to sufficient information for the authorities to advance their investigation.
The case unfolded when Castillo, age 77, was found with over 30 stab wounds at his home in the Stoney Point area on Tuesday morning by a relative, worried by his failure to keep up with his customary morning activities. As Yahoo News details, the violence of the scene was underscored by the number of wounds inflicted upon the victim, and the subsequent theft of Castillo’s vehicle — though, it has been recovered since by the police.
Originally, surveillance imagery distributed on Thursday had highlighted two persons of interest, one of whom was seen operating a 1999 beige GMC Sierra pickup truck, bearing the Texas license plate PZN9901. The relationship between the two individuals, and their link to the murder, was not disclosed by the sheriff’s office.
Citizens who have knowledge of the case had been encouraged to come forward. They could have shared tips with the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office or anonymously through Crime Stoppers, thus potentially aiding in the delivery of justice and, earning a chance for a cash reward. But now, as the web of clues tightens and the pursuit narrows, the public watch has eased — replaced by the meticulous gears of investigation. It's a cycle of civic duty, spinning under the harsh Texas sun, where community and law enforcement weave together the narrative of public safety, punctuated by such individual tragedies.
