The City of Boulder has officially taken the initial step forward in the Alpine-Balsam site's much-anticipated transformation. Last Tuesday, city leaders and community members gathered to mark the beginning of a project poised to reshape and invigorate the neighborhood, as reported by the City of Boulder.
Residents are invited to formally learn about what's coming during an Open House on January 8, 2025. From 6 to 8 p.m. at the Casey Middle School, individuals can directly meet the people behind the construction, understand the project's various timelines, and discover comprehensive details regarding the forthcoming flood mitigation and housing projects. This information was also shared in the city’s announcement.
The project stands on the grounds of the former Boulder Community Health (BCH) hospital, a property acquired by the city in 2015. After years of planning and community engagement, the site is set to host both affordable and market-rate housing, new public spaces, as well as the city's Western City Campus. The news release outlines visions of increased greenery, sustainable infrastructure, and accessible travel options for residents.
Significant to the redevelopment plans is the flood mitigation project slated to kick off early in 2025. This part of the work aims to move the Alpine-Balsam site out of the high-hazard flood plain, enhancing local infrastructure to better protect the community. "This groundbreaking and our upcoming work come after years of hard work, collaboration and community engagement," City Manager Nuria Rivera-Vandermyde said, per City of Boulder, stressing the project's focus on "equity, sustainability and on leading by example, walking the talk of our citywide goals." The project will also include improvements to pedestrian and cyclist facilities and utility upgrades.
