The City of Boulder is celebrating a milestone for its Youth Opportunities Program (YOP) and Youth Opportunities Advisory Board (YOAB), commemorating 30 years of dedicating efforts, to nurturing the younger members of the community. Set to take place on Thursday, Nov. 19 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Penfield Tate II Municipal Building, hopes are high for a grand turnout as current staff, past and present program participants, and former board members get together to reflect on the program's three-decade-long journey.

According to the City of Boulder, the YOP has played a pivotal role in empowering Boulder's youth, supporting them to find their voice, shape their community, and develop lifelong skills. Whether it's through government outreach, offering opportunities for community leadership, or the granting of funds for personal and community projects, YOP has remained steadfast in its mission.

"Programs that empower youth to participate in civic life are an investment in our future," said Mario Martinez-Varelas, the program manager of YOP, as per the City of Boulder. During its existence, the program has accomplished notable milestones including providing paid internships for 30 students within the Boulder City government, honoring over 200 Outstanding Youth Volunteers, and supporting over 100,000 young individuals with grants for cultural, educational, and recreational activities.

The Youth Opportunities Advisory Board, comprised of high school students, also plays a critical role, offering guidance and driving impactful initiatives. Celebrating the participation of over 450 students since its inception in 1994, YOAB has stood as a testament to the city's commitment to fostering civic participation and advocating for youth voices in the planning and development of the city. Dr. Bianca Gallegos, BVSD Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships and YOAB alum, is set to attune audiences to the tangible effects of YOP's work at the upcoming 30th-anniversary event.
