
The community of Cary has come together to mourn the loss of a 13-year-old girl, who has been identified as Shiyu "Chloe" Hua. She was struck and killed by a garbage truck while crossing High House Road in a crosswalk the day after Thanksgiving. As reported by ABC11, Chloe was accompanied by two adults at the time of the tragic incident.
An individual, opting to remain anonymous, conveyed to The News & Observer the distress that unfolded, stating, "It was kind of a gut-wrenching scream." The eyewitness additionally remarked, "It’s absolutely horrible...It really scared me from what I heard, and prayers out to her family and everybody who was affected." The driver of the truck, identified as Adrian Holt, reportedly failed to yield the right of way to Hua and the two pedestrians while making a left turn onto High House Road.
Subsequent to the incident, a Wake County ambulance happened to drive by before Cary emergency responders could arrive at the scene, as per details in a warrant obtained by WRAL. Tragically, Hua succumbed to her injuries en route to Duke University Hospital in Durham.
Holt, the driver, now faces charges including misdemeanor death by vehicle and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. He revealed to officers that he had completed the required class but had not finished the paperwork at the sheriff's office that is necessary to obtain the permit for his revolver, which officers found in his work bag. Inexplicably, this incident occurred and Hua's life was taken in a moment—her future reduced to memories for her loved ones.
